How to choose a harness?

Categories

A harness is a universal piece of equipment that is used during walking and training. Unlike a collar, it practically does not restrict freedom of movement and at the same time allows the owner to control the dog. A harness is an ideal solution for animals for whom a collar is contraindicated due to anatomical features or health problems. However, despite the obvious advantages, ammunition can cause harm if it is poorly designed or simply does not suit the pet. Well-known veterinary rehabilitators Amy Watson and Pete van Dungen have compiled a set of rules for choosing a harness based on their own observations of dogs that they have examined and treated.

Non-restrictive structures

This is ammunition that does not interfere with the free movement of the forelimbs. Most often it has a Y-shape with slings in the chest area, far from the trachea. There are longitudinal chest and back straps. The design corresponds to the anatomical features of the dog’s body and does not move upward during movement, turning into a collar. Models of this type are made from natural and artificial materials: leather, canvas, canvas, velor and nylon.

Non-restrictive harnesses are a good solution in the following cases:

- for dogs of decorative breeds (for example, Yorkshire terriers) that suffer from
collapse of the trachea and may suffocate if the collar is placed on them and pulled too hard
leash;

- in the postoperative period after surgery on the neck (in particular, with injury to the intervertebral discs);
- for restless dogs that constantly pull on the leash - when wearing a harness, the center of gravity changes, so the animals behave more confidently;
- for pugs, Pekingese and other brachycephalic breeds that experience breathing problems and are prone to eyeball prolapse;
- for dogs with increased intraocular pressure and a tendency to it.

When purchasing harnesses, be sure to check the fit by inserting two fingers under the straps. The equipment should fit tightly, leaving a small free space between it and the dog’s body - this helps prevent friction and squeezing. Models with protruding seams and fittings on the inside, which can injure the skin, should be avoided.

Types of equipment

The material and shape of the ammunition are selected taking into account the anatomical characteristics of the animal. Harness vests made of soft elastic fabric are suitable for small and medium breeds. They are made of breathable materials that prevent hypothermia and overheating of the animal. They are lightweight (for example, the Soft Vest model) and insulated. For larger breeds, reliable leather harnesses with metal fittings are suitable.

Equipment for puppies is made from light and durable materials with a soft texture that do not burden the fragile musculoskeletal system. The equipment provides motor freedom and prevents sudden movements. Pets who have reached the age of 9–10 months are walked on a harness, since earlier use of equipment can cause crooked paws and other problems with the musculoskeletal system. Some non-restrictive harnesses have a handle at the back or withers. It can be used to lift small pets to be held or to get around an obstacle. Thanks to the handle, it is easier to control the motor activity of large breed dogs, especially older ones and weakened after illnesses and injuries. By supporting the harness, the owner makes it easier for the dog to move.

Bounding Structures

The distinctive features of this equipment are the presence of belts in the shoulder joint, most often across the chest. There are models with slings that are located behind the armpits of the front legs or around the back. Restraining structures put pressure on the muscles that are responsible for the mobility of the forelimbs. As a result, the range of movements decreases, and the dog cannot make sudden jerks.

The use of restraining equipment is justified when it comes to search and rescue and police dogs. This type of harness is often worn on guide dogs. The equipment is equipped with a rigid arc, which ensures good contact between the owner and the animal and simplifies control. Restraining harnesses serve as a tool for training problem and disobedient dogs. Belts and slings prevent the pet from getting out of control, for example, breaking off the leash and throwing itself at other animals. Our boutique offers a large selection of harnesses for all breeds. To make the pet comfortable, equipment is selected taking into account the size of the pet - the circumference of the neck and chest at the widest point, the distance from the withers to the base of the tail.
